Eupatorium is generally found in overgrazed pastures and waste places. They are perennial herbs growing 3-5 feet tall having stout, hairy stems and opposite leaves with a broad wrinkled base which surrounds the stem. The flower heads are in loose terminal clusters and are white to purple depending on the species. The genus is named in honor of the Greek physician, Eupator Mithridates, who used this genus as a medicinal plant. Leaves and flower tops have been used as a gentle laxative. Some of these plants such as Joe-Pye-Weed, are found in gardens.

Baccharis pollen grains are oblate-spheroidal to prolate-spheroidal; the amb triangular, 3-4 lobate and 3-4 colporate. The sexine is generally thick, tectate, and has long spines. The intine is thin but slightly thickened below the apertures.
The grains are typically 20-30 micrometers in diameter.
